Deck Park: Economic Shot in the Arm, or Waste of Tax Dollars?

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – The money’s been appropriated, and it’s going to get built.  That’s the position of former Dallas mayor Dwaine Caraway, talking about the deck park that’s in the works for I-35E near the Dallas Zoo.

“If it doesn’t happen here, there have been other Council members who have said ‘give me the $40 million’,” said Caraway.  “We’ll gladly put in Adam McGough’s district.  We’ll gladly put it out on 635.  The $40 million is gonna go somewhere.”

District 4 council member Carolyn Arnold isn’t happy with the planned deck park…she says the money needs to be spent on fixing roads, better senior citizen housing and other immediate concerns.

“We’re here to represent the constituents that have elected us to serve their needs,” said Arnold.  “A deck park was not on the agenda.  They want clean alleys, clean streets, pick up the dogs, take care of the senior citizens, take care of the youth.”

Caraway said the $40 million is budgeted for a park, and can’t be spent on other projects.  It will span I-35E near the Zoo’s main entrance, from Marsalis Ave. to Ewing Ave.
