It’s Not a Joke…Dogs Pose a Real Threat to Postal Carriers

Now that school’s just about out, the US Postal Service is asking parents to talk to their kids about the family dog and their neighborhood mail carrier.

For instance, kids should never hand mail to, or take mail from the carrier, because Fido could take it the wrong way.

“If a letter carrier takes the mail from the kids, the dog can view that as a threat to the child,” said Dallas Postmaster Yulonda Love.  “So we want to make sure we don’t put them in that predicament.”

Love also says if you have a dog, please keep it well away from the door during delivery hours.

She asked the City Council Wednesday afternoon to do something serious about getting a handle on the stray dog situation.  She was accompanied by postal carrier Randall Hebert, who knows personally what it’s like to be attacked by a dog…he has a scar in his hand as a reminder.
