DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – After the city of Dallas broke up Tent City under I-45 many of the homeless have moved to South Boulevard. Residents of South Dallas say tents are popping up there and they’re looking for a solution to the problem to present to the newly formed Dallas Commission on Homelessness.

A new campaign is being launched to find solution based, innovative ideas from people throughout the city. One idea, offered by businessman Michael Sitarzewski is to convert the old Hensley Field Naval Air Station into a complex called Dignity Field.

Sitarzewski told WFAA-TV, “The idea is to utilize that entire facility, provide 4-levels of housing for the homeless. Tent emcampments, covered tent encampments, single rooms, and then also single family homes.”

Bob Sweeney, Executive Director of Dallas Life, which provides the largest homeless shelter in North Texas, said it’s going to cost money to find a long term solution to the local homeless problem. Sweeney believes the root causes of homelessness need to be addressed but he also expressed optimism in being able to raise money through donations.

“We have caring donors in Dallas,” he said. “It’s a very generous community.”

The new homeless commission is asking for Dallas residents to submit ideas to the Dallas City Council members by June 29th. They’ve also set up a Facebook page called Solutions for Dallas Homeless.
