FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – A van carrying nearly a dozen inmates was involved in a crash in Fort Worth on Tuesday.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. at I-35W and Meacham.  “We received notification that the van was struck by a vehicle as it was exiting,” said Terry Grisham, an executive administrator with the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office.  “I don’t know the van’s destination, but that would be the normal exit if they were heading from downtown to the Green Bay Jail, which is in that vicinity.”

Nine of the ten prisoners on board, and the van’s driver were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital.  “In transport van accidents like this, we generally want everyone to go to the hospital to be checked out by medical personnel.  They will be in custody the entire time, and then we will check them out and return them to the appropriate facility as soon as possible,” added Grisham.

The van is equipped with seat belts, and all prisoners are required to be buckled-up, according to Grisham.
