Collin County pastor sweats it out for school supplies

On a Sunday that tied the all-time record high temperature, a Collin county pastor was still sweating it out to collect 60,000 back-to-school items.

Joel Miller, senior pastor at The Summit church, has been on the roof of a trailer near U.S. 75 in Allen for 19 of the hottest days this year. He wants to fill the trailer with school supplies and has vowed to remain on a hunger strike until he reaches his goal.

Miller still needs about 3,000 items to complete his mission.

"There are people out there — kids who don't have the resources, the clothes; they don't have the socks, the underwear; they don't have T-shirts, book bags, lunch boxes, nothing — and they go in and don't feel good about themselves and they don't do well," Miller said.

The pastor has battled fatigue and heat exhaustion, and a nurse has been checking on him.

The donation trailer is in front of the Trinity Hall Irish Pub and Restaurant, 305 Central Expressway North, on the east side of the freeway.
