LEWISVILLE (WBAP/KLIF News) — A record amount of rainfall in North Texas has the US Army Corps of Engineers watching the Lake Lewisville dam.
The dam was subject to an investigation in 2015, where some feared it could burst and flood out hundreds of thousands of North Texans. Officials were concerned water seeping under the dam was weakening it.
State Representative Ron Simmons posted to Facebook this week that the Corps is monitoring the dam weekly, but will move to daily inspections if water levels continue to rise.
If it reaches 2015 water levels, the Corps will monitor it 24/7.
Through Wednesday morning, DFW International Airport had recorded more than 23 inches of rain this fall, which is about two inches more than the record set three years ago.
The rain has caused several lakes, including Lake Lewisville, to cancel recreational activities.
The grand opening event for the new fishing pier at Stewart Creek Park is being cancelled due to high water levels on Lewisville Lake. The fishing pier will open to the public as soon as water levels recede enough to safely do so. For more info, call Parks & Rec at 972-625-1106. pic.twitter.com/JnXcpVDFEo
